“It’s always fun to come up with that quick joke and see him smile.” Shared math teacher Andres Diosdado about his son, freshman Elias Diosdado.
Diosdado, an Algebra 2 and AP Calculus AB teacher, has been teaching at Gabrielino High School for 19 years. His son, Elias, recently entered Gabrielino for the 2018-2019 school year as a freshman.
Their relationship as father and son has quickly grown since Elias entered high school.
“I’m kind of lucky I get to spend time with my son, I know a lot of parents don’t get to spend much time with their kids.” stated Diosdado.
Both Diosdado and Elias described their relationship as being more work based during school hours, however afterschool the two are able to share a more familial bond.
“Here [relationship] it has to be more professional, but at home we can goof around and act a little dumber with each other.” laughs Diosdado.
Since Elias plays baseball, Diosdado makes an effort to support his son in and out of school. The two share a passion for sports and are able to connect through their love for athletics as well.
“We spend more time with each other, but that hasn’t changed our relationship completely.” Says Elias.
3 years ago, Diosdado’s eldest son also attend Gabrielino. He was able to connect and grow close with his eldest son and hopes to have that connection with Elias. Diosdado never fails to support his son in anything he does.
“I’m hoping that [Elias] and I get a little closer because [I] get to spend time with them and that’s one of the things I won’t regret.” Explained Diosdado.
Diosdado has also heavily influenced Elias as a person. Elias is inspired to do well after understanding his father’s childhood.
“[parent being a teacher] does put a lot of pressure, a bit of fear because knowing your teacher knows your dad, then they’re the first person they’ll go to is anything goes wrong is a bit worrying at times.” States Elias.
Diosdado described Elias as being hardworking, intelligent, and willing to put 100% into everything he does.
He states pleased, “I couldn’t be prouder of what he’s done and what he’s doing right now.”
