  On Nov., 6 the California State Senate and the governor of California will be determined during the Midterm Elections.

  For California State Senate there are 40 seats up for election, and in the past the Democratic Party was the majority. Thirteen Republicans and 2 Independents are running against a Democratic candidate.

  San Gabriel is apart of District 22, and there are no incumbents in the district currently.

  With Jerry Brown stepping down as California Governor, the Midterms election is at its high peak. President Donald Trump has endorsed John Cox, Republican, and former President Barack Obama has endorsed Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Democrat.

    With California having 52 seats in the U.S. House and 2 Senators, the votes in California remain crucial for the Midterm Elections.

  Since 2011, California has been fully Democratic in the State Senate, State Assembly, and California Governor.

  For U.S. Senate, California, Democrat Dianne Feinstein and Kevin de Léon are the top two followed by Republican James Bradley and Arun Bhumitra. Bradley is close behind Léon which could cause one of California’s Senate seats to flip to Republican.

  As of October,  the Democratic Party has 38 seats and the Republican Party has 14 in the U.S. House from California. In many districts, incumbent Democrats face a Republican candidate in the midterms. This could sway the U.S. House from California to become Republican if the Democrats are not able to regain their seats.  

  Currently, Republicans are the majority in both the House and the Senate. However, with 35 Senate seats and 435 House seats up for grab there could be a large shift from one party to the other.

  In order for the Democrats to gain control of the House they need to flip 24 of the Republican seats and keep the 194 seats they currently have. The New York Times stated, “In the Senate, [the] Democrats hope to win at least two new seats to regain control of the chamber, but their margin for error is slim.”

  The Midterm elections is necessary for the House of Representatives and Senators to determine legislative power, court nominations, investigations into the Trump administration, and impeachment.

   In addition, as a result of some of Trump’s controversial policies, many young voters are encouraged to register to vote and have their say in the government.
