Tomorrow at 3:15 p.m., the Gabrielino High School (GHS) varsity boys soccer team will play an away game against Arroyo High School (AHS). This will be the team’s tenth conference game. With only two league games left in the season, the team hopes to make the most out of their time on the field.

“I wouldn’t say Arroyo is our rival,” Coach Miguel Garcia stated, “but they do have talented players our team has to go up against.”

The boys played AHS in a home game yesterday. Scores were unavailable during press time.

On Jan. 26, the Eagles kicked it in a home game against Marshall Fundamental School. Scores were unavailable during press time.

Headed by co-captains Joseph Glenn, Daniel Lua, and David Rodriguez, the team feels confident in their player dynamics. The addition of three talented freshmen, Hector Gomez, Carlos Lopez, and Colin Yee, on varsity has only made the team stronger.

“This year definitely has a step up as far as skills,” said Lua. “Everyone has been working their hardest and [staying] committed and [it shows] at practice.”

The away game last Tuesday against Rosemead High School resulted in a 0-2 loss for the Eagles.

After the 0-4 outcome of the away game on Jan. 13 against El Monte High School, the Eagles lost to Mountain View High School at home, 1-4, on Jan. 17.

The Eagles suffered another loss at home to South El Monte High School, 2-1, on Jan. 11, the first game after returning from break.

GHS lost to AHS, 1-4, ending their previous winning streak, at an away game on Jan. 9.

Before facing AHS on Dec. 20, the Eagles added to their streak when they secured a victory over Rosemead High School, 2-0. As the first conference game, this win held a promising look into what the season might hold for the boys.

Following the Temple City Rams Invitational the week before, the team captured yet another preseason win, 2-1, against Temple City High School on Dec. 15.

The Eagles both won and lost a game at the invitational. They defeated Sherman Oaks High School, 3-2, but lost to San Gabriel High School in a shootout, 0-0.

The boys began their season with a few struggles, but have continued to stay positive and believe in the each other’s capabilities. With constant motivation and drive, the team strives to make this season the best yet.

“We are always trying to improve and do better than the previous years,” stated Lua, “so we all want to win some games and prove everyone wrong.”
