Gabrielino’s varsity girls basketball team is off to an exceptional start this season, completing their preseason with zero losses and two preseason tournament wins. The team’s success was highlighted by dominant defensive performances and improved ball movement compared to last year.
On Dec. 5, the team played against Montebello in Edgewood’s Lady Lions Classic championship game, winning 65–36. From the opening tip, the players set the tone defensively, limiting scoring opportunities through consistent boxing out.
“It’s been very fun playing with the new team for the past few tournament games. I was nervous at first, but our chemistry is really good and keeps strengthening as we play more together,” said senior Katelyn Chung, a second-year captain.
In the next tournament—Mark Keppel’s Winter Tournament—Gabrielino anticipated a more challenging matchup in the championship game against West Covina.
“We knew Montebello was going to be easy. For West Covina, we definitely had a different mentality and mindset going into the game,” Chung said.
The second tournament championship was earned with a hard-fought 35–24 win. Once again, strong defense and quick drives made the difference, as the team maintained disciplined positioning, boxed out efficiently and forced difficult shots.
With two tournament titles and an undefeated preseason record, the girls basketball team enters the regular season with confidence and momentum. They have already secured a win against Rosemead on Dec. 15 in their opening game, scoring 40–27.
“I hope that as a captain, I can help my teammates grow as players and be the best they can on the court,” Chung said.
The combination of defensive intensity and strong passing positions the team for continued success as the season moves forward.
