Gabrielino boys basketball put together a strong all-around performance against El Monte High School on Jan. 16, using disciplined defense, improved team chemistry, and contributions from across the roster to secure the win.
One of the biggest takeaways from the game was the opportunity for players who do not always receive significant playing time to step into larger roles. The chance to play freely made a noticeable difference.
“A lot of people who don’t usually get a lot of playing time were able to contribute,” senior Noah Dodd, team captain, said.
“It was really fun, and everyone showed what they could do,” Chayse Hoang said.
The team entered the game with a clear defensive goal. After emphasizing defense in practice, players aimed to hold their opponent scoreless for at least one quarter, a goal they successfully achieved.
“We’ve really been working on our defense,” Dodd said. “That was something we wanted to focus on, and I think we definitely saw improvement.”
Preparation also played a key role in the team’s success. Players said scouting and understanding matchups helped them stay one step ahead throughout the game.
“We did a lot of scouting on their players, so we knew our matchups and how to play them,” Hoang said.
Team chemistry has continued to improve this season, particularly under the new coaching staff.
“Our coach is younger, so he connects with us more,” Dodd said. He added that the coaching approach has helped create a more comfortable and positive environment. “It makes practice more fun, and there’s less pressure. I think that helps us play better,” Hoang said.
With strong energy, improved communication, and growing confidence, Gabrielino used the game as a sign of progress. As the season continues, the team looks to build on that momentum heading into its next matchup against Arroyo High School on Jan. 30.
