These are two things that most students think of when they hear the name “Mr. McClure.” However, behind all the physics concepts and animated films is an athlete with a passion for volleyball.

Although Kevin McClure stopped coaching volleyball three years ago, his love for the sport remains, which led to his decision to become one of the teachers for the enrichment classes offered at Gabrielino High School.

“I want to share my passion for the sport, especially with kids who are not in [the team],” stated McClure. “I think a lot of people […] don’t know how to play or aren’t trained correctly. Volleyball is only fun if you know what to do.”

With the plan to inform students about volleyball and how to play it, McClure hopes to accomplish this by teaching students basic volleyball skills and running drills.

The large gym has been reserved for his class, allowing him to simultaneously use three courts that are big enough to have every student engaged in the sport. McClure used his first day of enrichment class in the gym to practice skills, and will be using the second day to scrimmage.

By teaching students a sport they may be unfamiliar with, McClure will be able to share his knowledge as a former coach to hopefully inspire others to also develop an interest for volleyball.

“I want them to have an appreciation in understanding the skills,” said McClure. “But most importantly, I just want them to have fun.”
