For students interested in performing arts, they can use their embedded time to participate in an enrichment class known as Songwriting 101.

This course will managed by Drama teacher and stagecraft manager, JC Gafford and consists of integrating writing and poetry skills into composing music.  According to Gafford, this class is an opportunity for students to take a break from their academics and participate in something more relaxed.

“[Songwriting 101] allows students to pursue a passion that is not apart of the school or during the day,” he explained.

In addition, Gafford recommends taking the class due its beneficial mental and psychological effects that taking a performance arts class will have on student.

“Scientific studies have shown that people perform better academically when participating in the arts [field],” he stated.

Along with improved cognitive skills, students are able to master and enhance their skills in writing, poetry, and among musical skills.

For Gafford, Songwriting 101 is more than just a filler class it is time for students and himself to explore and share their passion for music.

“[Music] is something I love,” he stated, “[Songwriting 101] gives me the opportunity to connect with young people who share the same passion as I do.”
