Colorful posters, flowers, and surprise invitations have become a common sight on campus as prom arrives. What began as a simple way to ask someone to a dance has evolved into a tradition that teenagers all across the nation partake in to invite their loved ones to an unforgettable night.
For many students the promposal itself is more than just an invitation but rather an opportunity to make the experience as memorable as possible.
Some students spend weeks planning ideas tailored to their date’s personality to create something meaningful. Senior Julina Marquez recalls being caught off guard by the effort her date put into the surprise, “I was shocked to see the effort he put into it, the lights, candles, rose petals, and big letters spelling out ‘PROM?’ made the whole ordeal feel like it was out of a movie”.
However, for seniors Chayse Hoang and Crystal Vong, the meaning came through smaller, personal details. Rather than planning an elaborate spectacle, Hoang built his prom promposal around a red, white, and pink color scheme, choosing gifts that fit together thoughtfully.
“I chose to just do a red, white, and pink theme because all the little gifts I got her were around that color”, Hoang said. The approach reflected a quieter kind of effort, showing how promposals can feel personal without being extravagant.
Vong mentioned that one of her favorite parts was the personalized wordplay built into the proposal, “I really like the play on words by using our names to ask me out,” Vong said.
Together, those details made the promposal feel tailored to their relationship. For some students, it is those small touches, rather than elaborate displays, that give the moment meaning.
For Hoang, the planning process became something shared with friends. “Me and my friends were just kinda shopping together for stuff and I took some inspiration from him,” Hoang said. That collaboration added another layer to the experience, turning the promposal into not only an invitation but also a memory created along with friendship.
Seniors Janna Concepcion and Tim Li can relate to relying on friends to help carry out an elaborate promposal, “my friends kept me in the lunch line throughout lunch until he was ready to propose so I wouldn’t suspect anything”, Concepcion said.
The element of surprise made the moment feel more meaningful. Li added a personal touch by timing the proposal to a song tailored to Concepcion’s taste.
“I popped the question when a Bruno Mars song was playing because I know she’s a big fan of his,” Li said.
“I really like the song Risk it all by Bruno Mars so I think it was special in that sense,” Concepcion said. Moments like these show how promposals often reflect thoughtfulness as much as creativity.
Whether elaborate or simple, many students see promposals as a way to make the invitation feel special. In the process, the tradition has grown into a reflection of relationships, friendship and the excitement surrounding one of high school’s biggest milestones.
