Despite claims that Christmas has lost its magic, the holiday is not fading. The meaning of Christmas is expressed through traditions, togetherness and shared memories. While trends and technology change, the core meaning of Christmas remains strong. The belief that Christmas is “losing its spark” ignores what truly keeps the holiday alive.
To begin with, activities such as decorating the tree, baking holiday recipes, attending seasonal events and gathering for shared meals create consistency and meaning for the holiday. Sophomore Madelyn Atmoko said, “Moments around Christmas time are always filled with people buzzing with excitement and cheer.” By repeating these meaningful routines, families help preserve the magic of Christmas year after year.
In addition, togetherness keeps Christmas meaningful. The holiday encourages people to pause their busy lives and spend time with others. “Spending time with others is one of the most essential parts of a genuine Christmas and is where you experience the most joy,” said freshman Katie Huang. This sense of connection is what separates Christmas from any ordinary day.
Beyond traditions and time spent together, memories preserve the holiday’s magic. People tend to remember laughter, shared meals and meaningful conversations more than gifts. These shared experiences create Christmas’s lasting impact on the community.
Rather than claiming Christmas is losing its spark, attention should be placed on protecting what gives the holiday meaning. By continuing traditions, prioritizing togetherness and creating new memories, the magic of Christmas can remain strong for future generations.
