On Thursday, Nov. 13, the dance team hosted an open dance class at Gabrielino High School from 4 to 5 p.m. The afternoon was spent teaching many novice dancers flashy routines, showcasing what the members of the dance team do best.
The class was a success, as many students came to learn strategic routines created by the dance captains themselves. Dancer Dana Cruz, senior, shared that the class helps students find passion for dance. “Although a lot of the girls who came didn’t have a lot of experience, they did well and caught on well, so I hope it was fun for them,” Cruz said.
Even though the open dance class is a fun event to help see where potential dancers are technically, all profits made go to the dance team. Senior Julina Mireles said, “The money we make from the fundraiser actually goes to guest choreographers and costumes for our end-of-the-year performance.”
In addition to adding funds, the event helps build the team for the upcoming season. Mireles added, “It helps people get more involved in the dance department because I know many are scared to take that step, so the open dance class really is a welcoming step for those who are intimidated.”
“I’ve gone back and forth for a while about wanting to join the dance team, and I feel that the open dance class has helped me decide on whether or not I want to do it,” attendee Lola Coldivar said. For students like Coldivar, the class offered not just new choreography but a chance for clarity and reflection.
Overall, the open dance class not only strengthened the dance team’s upcoming season but also encouraged new faces to explore their passion for dance.
