Boys cross country

Last Friday, 29 boys from  the varsity cross country team competed at the Mt. Sac Invitational, placing 11th out of 16 teams. The course was described  unenthusiastically by junior Sean Do as, “the most difficult, tiring,  hot course ever.”

The boys have proved that no matter what type of weather they encountered, the boys powered through the course lead by Jayson Espinosa,  junior. Espinosa and team captain, Charlie Tran, senior, are working towards improvement as a team in time for the Mission Valley League Finals on Tuesday.

Girls Cross Country

GHS girls cross country currently holds the fourth place slot in their league as they head into the Mission Valley League Finals which take place at Bonelli Park on Tuesday.  This year, one of the standout varsity athletes on the team has been sophomore Crystal Lok. In her first year on the cross country team, she has been performing exceeding well alongside the other varsity girls.

However, being on varsity as a sophomore can be intimidating.

“Being on varsity is kind of scary,” Lok said, smiling nervously, “But we’re a team, no matter what and we [try to] have fun [while competing].”

Football

Varsity football has been playing intensely this season.

“We’re working really hard as a team,” said team captain and quarterback Harrison Sanin, senior.

Although this football season has been a tough one, the men of GHS football are constantly striving for improvement.

For the seniors, Oct. 21 was their last Homecoming game. Despite the loss, 20-54, the varsity players left it all on the field.

“[I am] proud of my [teammates,] who played 100% every down,” tweeted junior Min Han.

Today, the team will head to Mountain View High School to face the Vikings.

Girls Volleyball

The varsity girls volleyball team is currently undefeated in the Mission Valley League. This year, over a quarter of a total of 19 team members were underclassmen, including sole freshman Leena Albelo.

On Tuesday, the team performed well, beating Mountain View High School, 3-1.

Despite a mix of new and returning players, the team has anticipated a very successful league season and is looking forward to a strong playoff run in the CIF playoffs.

“We’ve managed to make a statement and set a standard,” team captain Leslie Rivera, senior, said ecstatically.

Girls Golf

The girls golf team wrapped up its season on Oct. 17, finishing with the third best score in the Montview League.

“Our team got our best personal scores ever this year,” gushed co-captain Sarah Preston, senior. “We brought the most girls back [on] the second day of League Finals.”

The team has qualified for the CIF playoffs, and will be represented by its top six players: junior Stephanie Foo, junior Jasmine Lam, junior Yoon Maung, senior Sarah Preston, senior May Tang, and sophomore Samantha Tang.
