On Sept. 20, Gabrielino High School held its annual fall sports rally in the large gym. Members of the Associated Student Body (ASB) as well as the new ASB advisors, Edith Gonzalez and Chanda Strom, were in charge of the rally.
This year, the theme was Pixar Mania which was reflected by posters of movies such as “Monsters Incorporated,” “Up,” “Toy Story,” and “The Incredibles.” Decorations such as balloons, Luxo Balls, an Etch-a-Sketch screen, and alphabet blocks were used to encompass the theme.
ASB members were dressed in attire worn by characters from Pixar while Gabrielino’s jazz band played music from “The Incredibles”
“We thought Pixar would be something everyone is familiar with and excited about,” stated ASB secretary, Sarah Cheang, junior.
During the rally, members of the Homecoming court were revealed.
Hector Gomez, John Kurniawan, Carlisle Vinuya, and Shawn Yoshitani were announced as senior princes. Senior princesses include Raquel Chavez, Jiin Lee, Jennifer Lopez, and Mireya Zepeda.
Jack Chiou and Ami Sky won junior prince and princess while Karyme Peña and Logan Tan represented the sophomore class royal court. Freshman princess and prince are Jordan Liu and Mike Otoguro.
The Homecoming king and queen will be revealed during halftime at the football game against Mountain View High School on Oct. 11.
Per tradition, the rally honored the sports that are currently in season. Varsity members of football, girls volleyball, cross country, and girls golf were invited to walk in the rally.
A video depicting an inside perspective of each team’s dynamics, practices, and games compiled by senior Nicole Tanaka, was shown followed by a performance from the cheer squad.
To further promote school spirit, a class clash game was held in which two members from each grade level worked together to compile their Pixar themed puzzle pieces as fast as they could. The seniors won the competition and were awarded 100 points to their total class clash score which pushed them into first place.
“ASB wants to provide opportunities for all students to participate, and this game was a great chance to do that,” said Gonzalez. “It was fun and exciting to hear students cheer on their classmates, chant, and shout helpful directions to them.”
The plans for Homecoming spirit week were also unveiled. Teachers from the science department made an appearance at the rally to show students how to dress for each day of spirit week which will be from Oct. 7-11.
Oct. 7 will be Pajama Day, Tik-Tok Tuesday will take place on Oct. 8, Crazy Hair Day is on Oct. 9, Oct. 10 will be Pixar Theme Day, and class color day is scheduled on Oct. 11.
