“I wanted to move forward and see what [the future] holds for me,” Eva Shin stated enthusiastically on her new job as Gabrielinos assistant principal.
Originally a teacher from Los Altos Highschool in Hacienda Heights, California, Shin was recently employed by the San Gabriel Unified School District (SGUSD) as the new assistant principal for Gabrielino High School for the 2019-2020 school year to replace former assistant principal, Chris Guyer, following his departure back in December 2018.
Currently, Shin’s role in the administration consists of overseeing the Associated Student Body (ASB), disciplining the student population, and regulating school safety procedures. Her main reason to apply for the position was that she wanted to find ways where she can help out as an administrator so students would have a memorable experience in high school.
“I was curious in seeing how schools can be successful both academically and professionally and what [school administrators] can do to contribute to this success,” she stated.
In addition, Shin’s previous experience as an ASB advisor for Los Altos makes her an important figure for Gabrielinos ASB this year, especially since the organization is currently adjusting to the new changes made under a new management. She oversees their activities and collaborates with them in coordinating school events such as school registration and club rush.
“Working with Ms. Shin has been great since she is very kind and understanding,” exclaimed ASB club commissioner and junior Carlisle Vinuya, “she is someone who won’t hesitate to help you.”
School principal, Sharon Heinrich, stated that Shin’s background working with her previous school’s ASB and campus life has made her a valuable figure for Gabrielino in the midst of all the changes that are being made this school year.
“[Shin] is a wonderful addition to the school since she is very knowledgeable and has a great report with the staff and the kids,” Heinrich stated, “she was the missing link that our school needed.”
Although it was challenging for her at first trying to adjust herself in a new environment, the new assistant principal still looks forward to familiarize herself with the students and faculty on campus as much as possible. According to Shin, it takes a considerable amount of time for one to completely become apart of a community, especially if they are starting from scratch.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know all the students and learn [more] about Gabrielino’s school tradition,” she stated.
