Preparation, communication, and argumentation.

Every month, or every two months, depending on the debate category, the National Speech and Debate Association puts out a resolution, or topic, that has two sides. Debaters of the Gabrielino Screaming Eagles Speech and Debate team receive the resolution and are required to compile information and evidence into a case. At tournaments, debaters are assigned a side and their job is to present their case effectively, counter their opponent(s), and persuade the judge to their side.

   “Preparing for tournaments requires extensive research and led me to understand topics like universal basic income or plea bargaining in which I would never otherwise learn about,” said event leader Annica Wu, sophomore, who participates in Public Forum debate. “Debate really allows you to learn skills you cannot learn from other other events.”

   Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, and Parliamentary are the categories of Debate. They all differ in their restrictions and guidelines, but most require quick thinking, intense preparation, and organizational skills.

   “Debate is more than just a school activity, it’s a gateway for future opportunities and skills,” stated sophomore Sharon Liu. For once, people are forced to listen to what high schoolers have to say and actually pay attention to it. It’s amazing for those who are learning to be able to put their thoughts into words.”
