“Insatiable”
This Netflix original series was released on Aug. 10. The show surrounds a girl who was bullied for being overweight but then becomes thinner and seeks revenge on those who ever made her feel bad about herself. The show received a lot of backlash over the controversy regarding its portrayal of weight loss and body shaming.
“Thank u, next”
Ariana Grande released a single titled, “thank u, next” on Nov. 3 but did not receive much attention until the music video was released on Nov. 30. This track earned Grande her first number-one single in the United States after making it onto the Billboard Hot 100.
“Crazy Rich Asians”
After becoming the first Hollywood film in 25 years to feature an all Asian cast, “Crazy Rich Asians” broke many box office records. The film brought a new era of Asian representation alongside other films, such as “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”, which also featured an Asian lead.
“Black Panther/Infinity War”
The most recent Marvel movies were released around the same time and received almost equal amounts of attention. Though both movies cost around $300 million to produce, it all came back in billions in the box office. The only question left is: which movie was better?
Fifa World Cup
The 2018 World Cup took place in Russia where only the best countries went head to head in a worldwide competition of soccer. In the World Cup Final, France beat Croatia, 4-2 and took home the golden trophy.
The royal wedding
On May 19, the royal wedding of former actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, caused a worldwide discussion as the United Kingdom welcomed a new member to the royal family. Five months after their wedding, they also announced Markle’s pregnancy.
Youtube Rewind 2018
At the end of every year, Youtube releases a Youtube Rewind to recount all of the memorable and iconic moments that occurred. However, the 2018 Rewind earns its place as the top disliked video on Youtube. The video surpassed Justin Bieber’s music video for “Baby” by gaining 15.7 million dislikes.
ASMR/mukbang:
Although ASMR originated in 2010, during 2018, it has become more successful on media platforms such as Instagram and Youtube. Creators, otherwise known as “ASMRtists,” record videos of soft talking and triggers that cause listeners to feel “tingles.”
#Inmyfeelingschallenge:
After Drake released the song “In My Feelings”, comedian Shiggy created the #inmyfeelingschallenge, which went viral with hundreds of fans and even celebrities taking part in the dance.
Butterfly meme:
This meme originated from the Japanese show, “The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird,” where the character Yutaro Katori, confuses a butterfly as a pigeon. The meme was altered with different captions to depict the naivety of people through humor.
