Watercolor Wrapping Paper:
Take white wrapping paper, some watercolors, and go to town. This could also work with white boxes and bags. Be careful to not get the paper totally soaked in water or it will ruin the texture.
Buttons:
Wrap the gift, then cut enough felt to wrap around the gift at whatever length desired, glue, then add buttons. It will be another treat to go with the present itself.
Drawings:
Take some blank wrapping paper (old paper bags also work) and draw on whatever is desired. It could be little houses, hearts, holiday decorations, or leave the work for the receiver and tape on a pen to the initial wrapping.
Duct Tape:
For another fun addition to wrapping paper, use washi tape or decorative duct tape to add some pop of color. Blank wrapping paper works best. Tape can be bought at Target, Office Depot, or Michaels.
Newspaper:
Old newspapers can be used as wrapping paper. The comic section or different areas with pictures can be used to achieve a newspaper-worthy aesthetic.
