Now, the Eagles are heading to League Prelims on May 2nd and Finals on May 4th at Schurr High School.
With the last dual meet on April 19, the GHS varsity boys and girls swim teams rained victorious against Montebello High School. The boys team won, 119-37, and the girls ended with a clean sweep, 129-35.
Junior Victoria Sam finished in first place in the 100 Backstroke followed by freshman Wendy Yu, and senior Alyssa Yanez. The team’s winning streak continued as senior Michael Chiu finished first place in the 100 Backstroke event. The swim team kept adding to their wins as Wang’s fluid movements swept him to victory in the 100 Butterfly.
The 200 Freestyle Relay team, comprised of freshman Daniela Acosta, Alexis Lay, Yu, and junior co-captain Vanessa Wu ended in first place, seconds ahead of everyone else. The 400 freestyle relay team of junior Elton Chan, junior Gabriel Davis, senior Diego Hitomi, and senior captain Winfred Wang ended the meet with a win.
The season officially kicked off on March against Rosemead High School where the team ended with a win.
At Smith Park, the boys and girls team swam past San Gabriel High School. The boys triumphed, 127-43 and the girls team won, 128-41.
Winning against Alhambra High School on March 15, the girls and boys team won, 111-58 and 126-41, respectively.
The Eagles suffered their only loss against Mark Keppel High School, with a team that doubled in size.
On March 28, the boys and girls team faced Schurr High School in a home meet. The boys wiped out the competition, 119-51. The girls swam to victory, 89-81.
The boys and girls team secured a win against Bell Gardens, with both teams prevailing, 132-27 and 120-41.
The boys and girls team have had a successful season, 7-1.
“Besides the fact that a lot of people improved dramatically over a short period of time, the best thing about the season is that everyone was much closer and loves to be together. ” stated Wang
Throughout the meets the coaches give personal swim tips so that they could help the team grow. The swim team has greatly improved despite the setback of having an influx of new swimmers and a loss of many veteran seniors at the beginning of the season.
“All 6 relays on Boys varsity automatically qualified for CIF except for the boys 200 medley which is only 0.1 seconds off,” stated Coach Amber.
The highlight of the season for the team was attending Mt Sac on April 13-14.
