On April 27, the Gabrielino Lady Eagle’s softball team will play El Monte. Scores were not available at press time.
Last week, the team played Mountain view on April 20, and won 7-5.
Coach Andrea King attributed the win to their newfound energy, and explained that she had full confidence that the team could make the playoffs.
“Our chance to make the playoffs are high. We definitely have to beat at least one or two teams that we’ve lost to so far in the first round but it’s absolutely doable.”
Megan Lisney, player for the JV team, echoed this sentiment and expressed the confidence she has in her team because of their ability to find balance.
“We have times when we’re really serious, and times when we work hard and have fun at the same time,” Lisney explained.
The softball team lost to El Monte on Wednesday, April 18, by a score of 11-1.
Earlier on in the month, the team fought hard but was defeated by South El Monte, 4-0.
Amidst the struggles thus far, senior Gisselle Samano stated, “We’ve done really well. We’re a brand new team this year, so we’re really just becoming our own team and making a statement.”
Their effort showed in their game against Arroyo on April 11, as they barely lost by a score of 3-2.
Samano noted that the loss was hard for the team, as she described that Arroyo is one of their biggest rivals. However, Samano stated, “I feel like the easy part is being together as a team. [Our] communication and our bond is really there” and explained that t is this special bond that enables them to play as a cooperative unit.
On March 28, the Lady Eagles handily beat Marshall by a score of 12-2.
A week earlier on March 20, Mountain View won against the eagles, 3-0.
Freshman and varsity member Kaila Soto stated that “Mountain view was our toughest loss. Their pitcher was just on top of it. We couldn’t hit her riseball, that’s all she was throwing.”
Soto also stated that this loss fueled them to work even harder, as they were able to change their strategy by specifically paying closer attention to detail in regards to pitches.
