To end the season off, the Gabrielino High School varsity baseball team played their last game of the season against El Monte High School at Gabrielino on April 28. Scores for this game were unavailable at press time.
Previous to their last game, varsity baseball played Mountain View High School in El Monte on April 26. The team came away with a narrow victory, 4-2.
Well into their season, the Eagles faced off against South El Monte High School on April 14.
Being strong competitors, South El Monte made the game very close, but it resulted in a loss for Gabrielino. The final score came down to 4-8.
Throughout the game, senior pitcher Jordan Garcia and the team managed to defensively hold off against South El Monte with good plays in the outfield and infield.
One move executed by senior center fielder Nash Castillo resulted in a great catch in the fourth inning.
Base hits throughout the game were seen consistently from seniors Vincent DeMarco and Eloy Zarate, and freshman Jalen Sandoval.
Reflecting on the game, senior captain Zarate stated, “I think we as a team did well overall and did our best to play our positions, when it came down to it we really put our best effort into each game.”
On April 12, the team played an away game against Arroyo High School.
The Arroyo Knights baseball team scored 11 runs and limited the Gabrielino Eagles to three in the Knights’ league victory.
“This season has been challenging,” stated junior Zach Hill. “My greatest take away is we have to play every game 100% and we’ve really improved on our fielding.”
Earlier in the season, Gabrielino faced off against Arroyo and lost, 6-10.
With the defeat, Gabrielino fell to 9-7 overall. The Eagles were put to the test with a record of 9-10 against South El Monte who won 21-2 in their recent league test.
Winning 9-5 on April 8, Rosemead High School stole a victory against Gabrielino.
In a competitive game against Marshall High School, the varsity baseball team held their own, resulting in a win by one run, 3-2, on April 6.
Up until April 19, the Gabrielino High School varsity baseball team was 9-8 overall and in fourth place in the Mission Valley league.
Looking back at the season they played, many of the seniors reflected on their time in the team and looked ahead of their high school baseball years.
“From playing this year, I learned that you can’t have good moments without bad ones and it made me appreciate every good play so much more, including my first homerun,” stated Garcia. “This season was one I will always remember.”
