When I was about nine years old, I shared a room with my younger sister. Both of our headboards were against the wall, and in between our beds was a lamp and a pink radio that rested on a nightstand.
The radio was Barbie themed and had an array of orange and magenta flowers adorned across the front and top of the machine. It had an antenna that extended from the back, a disc player on the top, and a button that played the Barbie theme song. Unlike most radios which tend to be battery operated, this one had to be plugged into the wall in order to work.
One night, my sister and I went to bed as normal. We always kept our electronics unplugged and never gave a second thought about them before going to bed.
Before falling asleep, I turned my head to check if I unplugged the radio. The cord layed strewn across the floor unplugged. I felt a sense of relief wash over me as I quickly fell asleep. As time passed, the night was rather uneventful, but when the clock struck two in the morning, I was rudely awakened from my slumber. As I rolled over, the radio was blasting the song.
I felt groggy and confused, but I quickly snapped out of my daze when I knew that I had left the radio unplugged before going to bed and the radio only operates when it’s plugged in. I realized that someone had plugged the radio in while my sister and I were asleep, allowing the song to be played.
I unplugged the radio from the wall and called for my mom. She walked in, confused and slightly irritated that I had woken her up. As I told her what had happened, I was shaking and was frightened because I knew that I left the machine unplugged.
She laughed and assured me that nothing was wrong. She tucked me back into bed and walked out of the room. Though she was certain everything was fine, she couldn’t explain the fact that the radio had plugged itself back into the wall.
After she left, I recalled seeing something rather strange before falling asleep. I remember opening my eyes one last time and peering around my room. My eyes landed on the door, which was slightly opened, allowing a sliver of light from the hallway to come in. I’m not sure if this was just my eyes playing tricks on me or my sleep deprevation causing me to hallucinate, but I’m almost certain I saw something standing in the hallway, it’s shadow cast onto the floor of our bedroom.
To this day, I still can’t explain or comprehend what exactly happened that day. But I know for certain that someone or something was in my room that night.
