This Friday, Gabrielino High School boys varsity football team will face off against South El Monte High School (SEMHS).
Last season, after a tenacious and difficult fight, the Eagles faced a tough loss, 42-6, against SEMHS. This year, the Eagles plan on upholding their confidence as they play against SEMHS again.
“We came back with a newfound power,” stated captain, Donovan Sanin, senior. “We have good team communication and we push ourselves to get better everyday.”
On Sept. 20, the Eagles played against Mark Keppel High School. With the half-time score at 14-0, the Eagles kept up their energy and maintained good communication on the field. After a night of anticipation, GHS secured another win, 35-13.
“All of the players individual skills definitely contributed to the win against Mark Keppel.” stated senior, Justin Duong.
GHS obtained another win against Don Bosco Technical Institute on Sept. 13, 6-0.
On Sept 6, the Eagles traveled down to San Diego where they faced off against the Southwest San Diego Raiders. The team participated in Touchdowns Against Cancer, a program which unites high schools across the country and St. Jude’s Research Hospital, to play for a common cause. GHS clinched a win, 29-20.
GHS battled their hardest against Contreras High School on Aug. 29. Bringing home a win, 37-0.
The Eagles kicked off their preseason by playing against Sierra Vista High School on Aug. 23. After a vigorous and relentless fight, GHS lost their first preseason game against the Dons, 13-14.
The GHS varsity Eagles are optimistic that they will not fall back into the habits that plagued the team last year. The team as shown great improvements from past years. The Eagles are hopeful that their winning streak will carry on into the rest of the season, knowing that with hard work and determination success will prevail.
