In the event of extemporaneous speaking, performers are not given months to prepare and perfect their speeches in advanced. Instead, students are given one question on the day of the competition that is usually a topic that is politically related. They have half an hour to prepare their presentation in the most engaging way. Afterwards, the students are given 7 minutes to present.
“It’s not like any of the other events,” stated Ethan Lam, junior. “Not too many spectators know anything about the topic you are discussing so it’s fun to teach them about the topic.”
Although this event does not include rehearsed characters or a storyline, its informative nature allows for the audience to be captivated by circumstances they had not known before.
“[Extemp] gives me an opportunity to pour my time into something that would help me in the future,” stated Starlee Hoc, junior.
