This year’s 2018-2019 Gabrielino Speech and Debate team is led by seniors Kevin Pham, Stephanie Rubio, and Jaycob Wahinehookae.
Rubio explained, “Our jobs consists of anything from hosting novice tournaments, signing up our team for invitationals, organizing the Showcase, to the end of the year banquet.”
Being a captain of the award-winning team is not just about leading, it is about learning from each other and bringing out the best in everyone.
“We lost a lot of powerful voices going into this year, so part of [being a captain] was instilling confidence in our younger speakers,” Pham said.
Due to the smaller pool of students in the program this year, the captains had to work harder to accommodate for the loss. Despite this challenge, the Screaming Eagles were able to finish the competition season with their 22nd League Championship win in a row.
“Speech has given me the liberty to voice my own thoughts and opinion. I would not want to be apart of any other speech team. They are like my second family.” Wahinehookae proudly stated.
