Oratorical Interpretation is an individual event that requires participants to memorize a famous speech and add their own personal twist to it. It also allows participants to understand the goals and motivation of the original speaker to interpret the oration with a new voice to a new audience.
“OI is a cross between acting and public speaking, so it’s like a hybrid that requires skills from both,” stated sophomore Halle Fukawa.
Due to its limited rules in constructing a speech, OI is typically regarded as one of the easier events. However, the challenge of building confidence and breaking out of comfort zones still arise.
“I actually didn’t choose to be in OI,” said senior Cassidy Do. “I chose to stay because it was a place I felt like I had a lot of freedom to take a message and make it my own.”
