On March 21, Gabrielino High School’s Encore club hosted their second annual talent show in the Gary E. Goodson Theatre. The show featured a total of 10 acts performed by various students attending Gabrielino.
This year, the event was hosted by choir teacher David Pitts. Science teachers Laura Leyda and Joseph Salcedo as well as Jefferson Middle School’s orchestra teacher Ester Minwary were welcomed as judges for the night.
Sophomores Claire Bailey, Christian Lung, and Kelly Tran won over the judges with their cover of “Burn” by Phillipa Soo from Hamilton and took home first place.
“Getting first place was just a bonus,” stated Tran. “The real prize was performing with Christian and Claire, two of the most talented people I know.”
6 to 1 received second place with their dance cover of “Fake Love” by BTS. Senior Alec Moran and (grade) Aidan ____ came in third.
Encore’s talent show was open to students of all grade levels. Those interested in being a part of it were required to undergo an audition process in order to perform.
Auditions occurred on Feb. 13-15 during lunch and after school in the band room. Re-auditions, which were established for acts that would be given a second shot or acts that needed further improvement after the initial audition, were given on March 7.
Fifteen acts auditioned for the talent show, but only 10 acts progressed to the actual show itself. Decisions on the final acts for the talent show were made by Encore adviser Melissa Romero and members of the Encore cabinet.
“It’s my first and last year producing shows,” stated Encore cabinet member Tricia Liu, senior. “I’m really glad that I was able to experience this talent show.”
Tickets for the talent show were distributed throughout March by members of Encore and Romero in the band room. The tickets were available for $3 during distribution and at the door on the night of the show. All proceeds made go towards Gabrielino’s choir, band, and orchestra programs.
