“I am hoping that students will find an atmosphere of camaraderie and participate in something enjoyable,” stated Edith Gonzalez, physical education teacher and girls cross country coach.
Gonzalez wanted to teach badminton as an enrichment course for embedded time to give students an opportunity to exercise, especially to those who no longer have a physical education class but still have a desire to play and be active.
Her badminton class aims to release stress from schoolwork and acts as a time period within the school day to play without the concern or pressure of always having to academically perform at the top of the class.
This enrichment course also allows students to fulfill their desire of playing badminton without impacting their other classes or after-school activities. Additionally, those who are passionate about getting their daily exercise each day or, simply, want to learn how to play could benefit from this class.
On the first trial day of embedded time, Gonzalez discussed the expectations of participation while ensuring students still had time to play.
“[My goal for this class] is for students to appreciate the opportunity to do something different that would otherwise have not fit into their normal schedule of courses,” said Gonzalez.
