Girls volleyball spikes into CIF

      On Oct. 11, the Gabrielino girls varsity volleyball team defeated Mayfield High School, 3-2.

      The girls continued their winning streak for all of their games, ensuring their place in CIF championships.

      Team captain Joy Hano, senior, stated, “I hope we can get back on the third rounds of CIF.”

      The girls were victorious in their last home game on Oct. 10 when they played against South El Monte High School. Not only was this Senior Night, but this game was crucial for securing the title as Mission League champions along with advancing to CIF. Nevertheless, GHS cinched a win against SEMHS, 2-1.

      The Eagles faced off against Arroyo High School on Oct. 5, and defeated the Knights, 3-0.

      On Sept. 29, their hardwork and dedication especially paid off in the annual Gabrielino Fall Tournament as they competed against several schools.

      They finished the tournament on a strong note when they triumphed over Marshall High School, 3-0.

      Additionally, they managed to obtain a successful win against Gladstone Prep, 1-0.

      In the middle of the day,  they lost to Flintridge Prep, 2-1.

      Nevertheless, they were on a good track when they played against Pomona Catholic and won, 2-0.

      Their first tournament win was against Lake Arrowhead Christian, 2-0.

      Despite being consistent for the long duration of the game, they started off with unfortunate results against La Salle High School, losing 1-0. However,  of all the games they played at the tournament, the girls only lost two.

      Being the top team for the Mission Valley League, they are working hard and training to get far into CIF. From having morning practices at 7 am to trainings during the weekends, their ambition led them to win numerous matches and exceed within their league. Although they feel that their hard work had paid off, the girls still think that there are some things to improve, especially in terms of communication and teamwork.

      “We don’t work together as a team sometimes and do our own things, so I think we should improve on that,” stated junior Leena Albelo.

      With the season coming to an end, the team nonetheless want to do as well as they did last year. They hope to make it far into CIF just like they did in the previous years. By working together as a team, the girls hope that they will learn from their mistakes by helping each other out.

     

    The girls competed  in the 2018 CIF Southern Section Girls Volleyball Tournament – Division 5 against Campbell Hall High School on Oct. 18, winning 3-1.

     

    However, they lost to Aquinas High School on Oct. 20, 3-1.
