On Feb 17, Gabrielino High School’s girls varsity basketball team played in a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) game against Glendora High School in round two of the playoffs and lost at home, 47-79.
The Lady Eagles were quickly met with a tight defensive press, resulting in a score of 7-21 in the first quarter.
Due to a block that resulted in injury, Amanda Lee, junior, was taken out for the remaining two minutes of the second quarter, however this only led the team to fight harder for the rest of the quarter.
“Seeing [Lee] hurt brought us down, but at the same time it made us want to fight harder to avenge our teammate,” stated freshman Amanda Brunjes. “Win or lose, we’re a team and we look out for each other.”
By halftime the score was 16-41, but once GHS started the second half, a three pointer was hit by Lee which gave the Eagles hope. Towards the end of the third quarter, the gap was slowly closing, 33-56, with Glendora in the lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles continued to fight back, but fell to Glendora ending their playoff run.
The Lady Eagles played their last season game against Mountain View on Feb. 8, winning, 74-19, and celebrated senior night, where three seniors were given tributes and honored before the game.
The Lady Eagles ended their season with a 11-1 overall league record. Similarly, the boys varsity team also ended their season in league with the same 11-1 record.
On Feb 15, the boys varsity basketball team went up against Brentwood School in a home CIF playoff game. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles lost, 53-71, ending their CIF run.
In the first quarter, the Eagles played an aggressive offense that proved to be advantageous for them, ending the quarter with a three point lead against Brentwood. But at the end of the half, the score was 26-32, Brentwood with the lead.
Although Brentwood’s advantage was their height, this did not perturb the boys at all.
“Just cause we aren’t as tall doesn’t mean we can’t compete,” Kevin Lee, senior and captain, said. “They might be taller but we work harder so in the end it’s just all about willpower and effort.”
During the last quarter, the Eagles did not give up, which did not go unnoticed by Brentwood.
“[Gabrielino] played [their] hearts out and shot the lights out,” explained junior Donovan Wong, guard from Brentwood. “[The] crowd really supported [the team] and it was a great game.”
On Feb 8, the Eagles went up against Mountain View and gave it their all. They emerged victorious, 63-54, in their last home and league game. The game was also senior night, in which tributes were given to the 11 seniors on the team.
