Bright, colorful posters decorate the walls, engaging lunchtime activities take place in the quad, and enterprising fundraisers pop up—all happening right at Gabrielino High School. Behind it all is the Associated Student Body (ASB) of Gabrielino.
ASB plays a central role in Gabrielino, enhancing the high school experience for the general student body while members themselves benefit from participating in such an engaging course.
The journey begins with the application process, which proves to be challenging. Students interested in joining ASB must first attend an interest meeting. Afterward, they need to submit an application supported by 100 student signatures backing their ambition to become part of ASB.
Once they gather the necessary signatures, students go through an interview, which includes a panel made up of the ASB President, Vice President, Executive Cabinet, and Class President.
At the conclusion of the interview, the candidate is taken into consideration and assigned a role for the upcoming school year. These roles include officer of school spirit, etc.
For those seeking to hold elected class positions such as ASB President, Class President, or Class Vice-President, the process doesn’t end there. They must create and publicize a promotional campaign post or poster, and they are also required to deliver a campaign speech. This culminates in a voting process where the majority wins and positions are filled.
While it may appear to be a tedious process at first glance, the challenges come with great rewards.
ASB is a unique course in the sense that it provides a one-of-a-kind space where students can find personal growth while simultaneously helping better their community. Not many other classes at Gabrielino engage students with their school quite like ASB does.
Holding upwards of 100 events a year, ASB has many opportunities for students to find their space not only in the ASB community but also in the Gabrielino student body as a whole.
Evangeline Chen, freshman class president says, “ASB really challenges your time management abilities and helps you be proactive.”
“Our goal is to highlight the interests and accomplishments of all 1,441 students. The various interests or goals often overlap with one another. We must do our part to showcase the school’s talents,” Jesus Gonzalez, senior and ASB President, added.
While ASB serves the entire student body, it also profoundly impacts its own members. A course that, for those who take it, will enrich, improve, and elevate their high school experience.
