On Nov. 1st, the Gabrielino Eagles Marching Regiment (GEMR) celebrated their senior night. As GEMR concludes its final tournaments, they bid farewell to 13 seniors, marking the end of their musical odyssey.
“Our seniors were essential to the overall success of the regiment. We’re very grateful for their commitment to the team over the years,” said captain Alexander Sengelmann, junior. The GEMR ensemble consists of the woodwind, percussion, brass, and color guard—each group bringing its own unique flair that has led to numerous awards and victories in their respective sectors.
“I can’t wait to see what our seniors have in store for the future, especially for my precious seniors Dylan Liu and Joshua Peralta,” Sengelmann articulated.
Their most recent field tournament, held at Glen A. Wilson High School on Oct. 26, flaunted the impressive capabilities of GEMR. “At that time, our morale was really low—but this competition ended up being our comeback, with every member coming together, supporting each other, and delivering an unforgettable show. We swept 1st for band, color guard, and percussion,” said senior alto saxophonist Yilin Lyu.
“It was a true testament to the resilience and dedication of the GEMR family, and I’m so proud to have been a part of it,” said Lyu.
Before that at Baldwin Park High School, GEMR celebrated another major achievement, with both the band and percussion sections placing 1st. GEMR has firmly established itself as one of Gabrielino’s most successful units.
Throughout the season, GEMR has continued to exceed expectations, performing challenging routines with remarkable precision. Under the guidance of the captains, the team has shown exceptional cohesion and focus. Captain Gabrielle (Gaby) Navarro, senior, a veteran from the woodwinds section who has been part of GEMR since their freshman year, set an inspiring example for underclassmen and led their band toward a promising future.
“During my sophomore year when we had 5 AM call time, I felt like I was performing in my prime. The adrenaline gave us the excitement to perform and to give it our best shot,” said Navarro.
The team’s dedication shines not only in their victories but also in the strong sense of harmony that unites these musicians and performers. Perhaps one of the tightest-knit communities on campus, members are extremely committed and passionate about their craft.
“Our team’s close relationship is the leading factor to our success. People are comfortable asking questions, which allows them to get the help they need,” Navarro said.
As the season draws to a close, GEMR’s schedule remains packed, consisting of the Los Altos High School Field Tournament on Nov. 9, the South Hills High School Field Tournament on Nov. 14, followed by the SCSBOA Prelims on Nov. 16, and the SCSBOA Championships on Nov. 23.
“With the season concludes, I’m sad that this is all coming to an end, but I’m determined to perform with total commitment, not just for myself but for all the people who came before me in this program,” said Lyu.
With this season’s final notes played and memories made, the Gabrielino Eagles Marching Regiment marches proudly into the next chapter of their musical exploration, solidifying their well-deserved spot in Gabrielino culture.
