On Oct. 18, the Gabrielino Eagles took to the field against the Mountain View Vikings at the Eagle Stadium for the annual homecoming game. The Eagles dominated, 33-0. While the scoreboard reflected their success, the Eagles continue to strive for humility and improvement as they near the end of the season.
Under the leadership of coach Luis Gutierrez, the four senior co-captains: Isiah Caballeros, Daniel Casio, Albert (AJ) Tran, and Joseph Ulloa fueled the team’s confidence leading up to the game.
With Coach Gutierrez’s guidance, his “win-the-day” approach throughout the week pushed the team to collectively secure this win.
“The kids have been locked in with this “win-the-day” approach,” Gutierrez stated, “They were focused, aggressive and they definitely won the week which was the main reason for winning 33-0.”
The Homecoming Game had several notable highlights from Co-Captain AJ Tran, the team’s Running Back, and Safety, who showcased his speed and skill with a 75-yard touchdown run.
“We have something to play for; we’re not just out here for fun. We play for our school,” Tran emphasized.
The team’s chemistry was shone through plays from Quarterback Ely Lobban, junior, and Wide Receiver Nicholas Hoang, junior. Hoang demonstrated his ability to read defenses, rushing for 52-yards, while Lobban connected on 154-passing yards. Most notably, Lobban tossed two touchdowns on just ten attempts.
“We’ve shown a lot of growth over the past few games and we’re excited and giving our all to make this season memorable,” said Senior Running Back and co-captain Isiah Caballeros.
After a challenging last season, this year’s wins reflect the team’s hard work and adaptability under new coaching. With added weightlifting sessions and team dinners on Wednesday, where football talk is prohibited, the boys work on building a strong dynamic on and off the field.
“You play a lot better when you have fun. We knew it was Homecoming, and instead of being nervous, we went out there and enjoyed ourselves, and it paid off,” commented Casio.
With touchdowns made by sophomore Wide Receiver Peter Ruiz, a relentless defensive effort, and a well-executed passing game, the Eagles showcased their collective strength and determination.
“We didn’t want to take our foot off the gas at halftime, but we felt confident in finishing the game,” added Defensive Tackle and co-captain Joseph Ulloa.
The Gabrielino Eagles exhibited their skill, unity, and resilience this past Friday, proving to their school and administration the program’s excellence.
“When the leadership is solid and everyone is playing as a team rather than individuals, we can conquer difficult games,” Ulloa said, “confidence is key.”
