The 10: Famous Numbers

By Nicole Banh | Staff Writer

   10. 86. Lesser known is the meaning behind the use of 86 in restaurants, which is to be discarded or to indicate out of stock. If someone orders 86 pineapples on pizza, the cook will  know to exclude pineapples from the pizza. Of course, the alternative would be just to plainly state to not have pineapples.

   9. Pi, or 3.14. In a life where circles constantly surround everyone, from doorknobs to pie, what could ever be more well-known than a never-ending number, that elementary teachers force us to remember? Why these eight other numbers certainly are!

   8.  666. According to the Book of Revelation, the final book in the New Testament, 666 is the number of the Beast, more commonly known and associated with the devil in Christianity.

  7. Did you know that the speed of light is 186, 282 miles per second? Well, neither did I. I’m certain that this fact is extremely important to all.

   6. 6.67300 x 10^-11 m^3 kg^-1 s^-2 or also known as the gravitational constant, or G for short. Used by students and scientists alike, this number keeps us from the cold unfeeling abyss of space. It keeps us grounded on a rocky planet in unending turmoil.

   5. 13. This number is considered so unlucky that many hotels and airplanes simply do not have a 13th floor or seat. Therefore making the 14th floor or seat the unmarked 13th floor. May luck be on their side.

   4. Lucky number 7 is considered lucky in many cultures worldwide, and the multitude of reasons why is mind-boggling. Some reasons include the seven deadly sins, seven gifts of the holy spirit, and seven virtues, among many others.

   3. 18. In many countries becoming 18 years old is when people legally become adults. This is a time when the new adults are given more freedom, independence, and are released off into the world to do what they wish.

   2. 365.  The number of days in in the Gregorian Calendar year, discounting leap years, 365 keeps the world turning.

   1. In first place is number 1. For a vast majority of people, there’s nothing more coveted than getting that gold medal and become number 1. Whether it be sport, arts, or even who can best cycle backward whilst playing the violin. If it exists, then there is a competition for it.
