The Gabrielino High School girls golf team played its last match of the season on Oct. 20 at Marshall Canyon Golf Course in La Verne. The Eagles competed against Temple City High School, South Pasadena High school, La Canada High School, San Marino High School, and Alhambra High School in a four-hour, 18-hole event in the Montview league prelim and finals.
The players and coaches voted for the prelim and final to be on the same day, as it was originally scheduled to be a two-day event. Senior Khin Maung was Gabrielino’s best performer, shooting an 80.
It marked the ending of a subpar season compared to previous years. Last year, the girls golf team qualified for CIF, but chose not to compete, as the match fell on the same day as graduation.
The Eagle’s odds of making CIF this year were “slim” according to Coach Steve Swanson, but that did not deter the team from competing.
“We didn’t achieve our goal, but we had fun trying,” said Swanson.
The Eagles finished the season with an overall record of 3-7.
In their last regular league match on Oct. 14, the Eagles faced off against Temple City High School in a 227-188 loss at Alhambra Golf Course, Gabrielino’s home course.
“We played well but they played better. Not much you can do,” said Celine Ma, senior.
Gabrielino’s loss to the Rams followed a 242-218 loss against the San Marino Titans on Oct. 12, also at home. This was their second match against the Titans, the first resulting in a 257-218 loss on Sept. 23.
On Oct. 7, the Eagles faced South Pasadena High School at home, losing 239-199. This was one of Gabrielino’s best performances all season but the Tigers were able to edge them out.
“We knew we were playing one of the best teams in the league,” said Priscilla Chin, senior, “but we still gave it our best shot and ended up playing really well.”
On Oct. 5, Gabrielino matched up against the La Canada Spartans at Brookside Golf Course. The 260-242 loss came as a disappointment, as the Eagles had beaten the Spartans 225-235 earlier this season.
Five days before the loss to La Canada, Gabrielino won against the Alhambra Moors at home, due to a forfeit. While the Eagles shot a team score of 256, Alhambra did not have enough players to earn a qualifying score.
