The Gabrielino High School softball team played their last game of the season on April 28. Scores were unavailable at press time.
On April 26, Gabrielino played against Mountain View High School. Scores were unavailable at press time.
Gabrielino played against Bell Gardens on April 18 and lost, 2-16.
In their second game against South El Monte on April 14, Gabrielino lost, 5-15.
On April 12, Gabrielino played against Arroyo High School. The Eagles faced a rough start during the first inning, with Arroyo scoring four points.
In the second and third innings, Gabrielino kept defense tight by catching balls sent deep outfield, but had difficulty getting on base.
Arroyo scored another run at the top of the fourth inning, but the Eagles prevented the rest of the bats from getting home.
At the top of the sixth inning, Arroyo gained a point, but Gabrielino met it with a strong offense. Two walks and a hit deep into the outfield loaded the bases, with a bunt allowing senior Karina Fong to reach home.
Fong’s favorite part of the sport is being able to compete with her team.
“I get to bring out my competitive side,” said Fong.
Arroyo scored another point at the top of the seventh inning. With Gabrielino unable to make up the point deficit at the bottom of the inning, the game ended, 1-7.
Despite the recent losses, lead softball coach Robert Godinez saw the season as a valuable experience.
“[The season has been] rewarding, I would say, ‘cause it’s been very challenging, but at the same time we are seeing them grow and learn,” stated Godinez. “Winning games is going to be tough, but I like that the kids are a very tight knit group.”
On April 8, Gabrielino lost a game against Rosemead High School, 1-13.
A game between Gabrielino and Glendale High School on April 8 resulted in a tie, 7-7. It was Gabrielino’s only tie of the season.
“We were down 4-0 and came back with seven. It was really fun because we saw the offense really pick up their bats,” said Fong. “We found places to put the ball in play.”
The Eagles went against Marshall High School on April 6 and shut them out, 16-0.
“We had a girl who had never played before named Alexia and she got two hits [that game],” recalled Godinez. “After every game, we give a player of the game belt away to whoever did the best. She got the belt and everyone went crazy.”
El Monte High School scored a victory over Gabrielino on April 1, going 17-0.
On March 30, Gabrielino lost against Mountain View, 9-0.
Gabrielino played South El Monte on March 25 and was defeated, 1-24.
In their first game against Arroyo on March 25, Gabrielino lost, 1-12.
According to pitcher Gianna Galvez, senior, the season had its ups and downs, but playing with the team remained a major source of enjoyment for her.
“I’d say the best part [about softball] is the relationships you make with everyone,” said Galvez. “You make friends with people you’d never expect to be friends with.”
