To celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Hamilton,” the musical returned to the big screen. At the theater, the usual process unfolded—lights dimmed and the audience settled in—but unlike most films, people didn’t stay quiet. Instead, the crowd grew louder.
The cast sang their hearts out on the big screen, where everything felt bigger and more immersive. Viewers could see the actors’ emotions, clearly hear their voices, and feel the heart of the story. It wasn’t just the film that felt revolutionary—the theater’s atmosphere played a key role.
Although “Hamilton” is available on Disney+, seeing it in theaters offered a more interactive experience.
Additionally, watching the movie in theaters offered a unique experience. For one, the movie includes a behind-the-scenes segment on the musical’s origin, featuring the original cast including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. To recreate the magic of the live performance, the film included a 10-minute intermission, mirroring the original production.
Many people were drawn to this celebration, attracting a wide range of audiences, from children to elderly people. Those who loved “Hamilton” came together to watch and sing; the movie being in theaters made the musical so accessible that even those who didn’t like musicals came to celebrate.
Online, many people were seen celebrating in different ways. People refused to throw away their shot; they sang as loud as they could in the theater, dressed up as historical characters, and even threw popcorn at the villains. For most, as the movie states that singing is allowed, the sing-along was a fan favorite, being highlighted as one of the best things about watching the movie in theaters.
Senior Owen Dowell, who went with fellow senior Sophia Sanchez, says “it’s really about the company you bring with you.” For many, celebrating the movie with friends and family made the experience especially enjoyable.
This musical retells American History and the legacy of Alexander Hamilton in an entertaining way, but the most ironic part is how the musical has a legacy of its own. “Hamilton: The Musical” had a lasting impact on theater lovers and history nerds, becoming one of the most popular musicals worldwide. Its popularity led to performances in other countries, despite the story’s focus on American history.
“You’ll never get the 100% experience of Broadway, but this is close,” said Dowell, referencing the high cost of live tickets.
So while it costs almost $20 to watch the movie in theaters, it is an experience that’s worth having. The 10th anniversary screening successfully recaptured the magic of opening night—through singing, dancing, and shared enthusiasm—leaving a legacy that fans and newcomers won’t forget.
